• OWL classes run in most types of Florida weather, with the view that variable weather conditions are an opportunity for play and learning! As long as your Owlet is dressed appropriately and the conditions are safe, OWL classes continue on!

Classes will be canceled if weather conditions are deemed unsafe, such as:

    • Thunderstorms or lightning forecasted in the location

    • High winds (over 25 mph)

    • Extreme cold (wind chill below a safe threshold - rare, but sometimes January has some cold days!)

    • Air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups

    • A tropical storm or hurricane forecasted in the area

If Owlets is cancelled due to weather, caregivers will be notified via email and text at least 1 hour before class begins and provided a refund.

  • Please dress your child in clothes that can get wet, muddy, and that dry quickly!

Visit the Recommended Clothing page for more info, including visual recommendations for different types of Florida weather.

    • Snacks for you and your kiddos (feel free to take a snack break whenever you need!)

    • Water

    • Your preferred brand of insect repellant - recs

    • Sunscreen

    • A dry set of clothes and a towel (optional, but helpful if your child splashes in the bay and wants to be dry after)

  • Caregiver Expectations During Class:

    • Active Presence:  Caregivers are invited to get curious with their children and connect with the natural world together. You’re also encouraged to allow them space to explore, problem-solve, and take age-appropriate risks. Oftentimes, standing back to observe their focused play can be a meaningful way to support their growth.

    • Modeling Behavior: Engaging curiously alongside your child—asking questions, noticing details, respecting wildlife—helps children learn how to thoughtfully interact with their environment and deepens your shared connection.

    • Supporting Risky Play: Healthy risk-taking is encouraged at OWL, including climbing, balancing, and trying new things. We encourage caregivers to spot (not stop) children as they challenge themselves, offering guidance and reassurance rather than doing things for them.

    • Safety & Supervision: While Lauren is certified in CPR and First Aid and will be monitoring the group, each caregiver is responsible for supervising their own child(ren) throughout the session.

    • Cell Phone Use: Caregivers are encouraged to keep phone use to a minimum during class. Your presence and attention are powerful tools for deepening your child's engagement in the moment.

    • Clothing & Gear: Please help your child dress appropriately for the weather and terrain. Mud, water, and messes are part of the fun—embracing the elements together is part of the learning at “forest school”!

  • Safety Procedures Onsite

    • Qualified Staff: All OWL classes are led by a guide who is certified in Infant and Child CPR and First Aid.

    • First Aid Preparedness: A fully stocked first aid kit is available onsite during all sessions to address minor injuries such as scrapes, cuts, insect bites, or splinters.

    • Site Inspection: Before each session, the area is thoroughly inspected to identify and manage any potential hazards, such as sharp objects, fallen branches, animal waste, or unstable terrain. Any dangerous items are removed or clearly marked.

    • Encouraging Risky Play Safely: OWL believes that “risky play”—like climbing, balancing, and exploring—is essential for children’s development. Children are supported and guided in assessing risk, building confidence, and learning to navigate challenges safely. Risky play is always supervised and guided to promote both safety and growth.

    • Emergency Protocols: In the event of a more serious injury or emergency, caregivers and the guide will collaborate, and appropriate medical assistance will be sought. All emergency contact information is kept readily available during class hours.

    • Allergy & Health Awareness: Please share any medical concerns or allergies in advance. Bring any necessary medications or supplies (e.g., epipens).

  • To keep our OWL community safe and healthy, we ask that children stay home if they show any of the following symptoms:

    • Fever (100.4°F / 38°C or higher)

    • Vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours

    • Persistent cough or difficulty breathing

    • Unexplained rash

    • Contagious illnesses (e.g., strep throat, flu, pink eye, COVID-19)

    • Extreme fatigue, discomfort, or inability to participate in outdoor activities

Please keep your child home until they are symptom-free for at least 24 hours without medication.
